Use of Hypnosis in Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a disorder characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort, altered bowel habit (chronic or recurrent diarrhea, constipation, or both in alternation).IBS affects up to 15% of the population and 60- 65% of IBS sufferers are female, 35 – 40% are male. IBS affects people of all ages, even children. The exact cause of IBS is not known. Symptoms appear to result from a disturbance in the interaction between the gut, brain and the nervous system that alters regulation of bowel motor sensory function. Symptoms can be exacerbated or triggered by stress.
IBS impacts many lives and can range from mild inconvenience to severe debilitation, controlling many aspects of one’s emotional, social and professional life.Hypnotherapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of IBS in a number of research studies and is now provided as a Clinical Service by some trained Hypnotherapists. Research by Dr.Wendy M Gonsalkorale, Phd at the Dept of Medicine, University Hospital of South Manchester United Kingdom showed marked improvement was seen in all symptom measures:
- Quality of life
All subgroups of patients appeared to do equally well with the notable exception of males with diarrhoea who improved far less than other patients. No factors, such as anxiety and depression or other pre-hypnotherapy variables could explain this lack of improvement.
Conclusions- This study clearly demonstrated that hypnotherapy remains an extremely effective treatment for IBS***IBS can only be diagnosed by a medical professional and referral by your Doctor or Gastroenterologist is required at our clinics.
Treatment for IBS can take several sessions usually on a weekly basis to start. The first consultation is a 2 hour session. For more information on IBS and Hypnotherapy, go to www.helpforibs.com
